ANSWER
1. a) The Book You
Like Most: The book I like most is My Grandmother’s House by Kamala Das. This
book is very close to my heart because it expresses deep emotions in a simple
and touching way. The poet describes her childhood days spent in her
grandmother’s house with great love and affection. That house was full of
warmth, care, and happiness. After her grandmother’s death, the house became
lonely and silent, which made the poet very sad.
What I like most about this book is its emotional honesty. The poet openly
shares her feelings of loneliness and longing. The language of the book is
simple, yet it leaves a deep impact on the reader’s mind. It teaches us the
value of love, family, and emotional attachment. The book also reminds us that
material things cannot replace emotional security.
This book inspires me to respect relationships and remember my roots. It helps
me understand human emotions better and makes me more sensitive towards others.
That is why this book is my favourite.
b) Election: Election
is an important process in a democratic country. Through elections, people
choose their representatives to form the government. In India, elections are
held regularly at different levels such as local, state, and national levels.
Every citizen above the age of 18 has the right to vote.
Election gives people the power to express their opinions. It ensures that the
government is formed by the will of the people. During elections, different
political parties present their plans and promises. People compare them and
vote for the candidate they trust the most.
Elections also teach us responsibility and awareness. A good voter always
thinks about the future of the country before casting a vote. Free and fair
elections are necessary for a strong democracy. If elections are not honest,
corruption and injustice increase.
Thus, elections play a vital role in maintaining democracy. Every citizen
should vote wisely and honestly to help build a better nation.
c) Discipline: Discipline
means following rules and behaving in an orderly manner. It is very important
in every part of life. A disciplined person is punctual, honest, and
responsible. Discipline helps us manage time and work properly.
In student life, discipline plays a key role. Students who follow discipline
perform better in studies and develop good habits. Discipline teaches
obedience, self-control, and respect for others. It helps us achieve our goals
step by step.
Discipline is also important in family, school, and society. Without
discipline, there will be chaos and confusion. Great leaders and successful
people always follow discipline in their lives.
In short, discipline is the backbone of success. It makes life smooth and
meaningful. Therefore, everyone should practice discipline to become a good
human being and a responsible citizen.
d) Your Aim in Life:
Everyone should have an aim in life. An aim gives direction and purpose to our
life. My aim in life is to become a good teacher. Teaching is a noble
profession because it helps shape the future of students.
A teacher not only teaches books but also builds character and values. I want
to educate students, especially from rural areas, and help them become
confident and responsible citizens. Education can remove ignorance and bring
positive change in society.
To achieve my aim, I work hard and stay focused on my studies. I believe that
honesty, dedication, and discipline are necessary to succeed. I want to inspire
students to dream big and work sincerely.
Thus, my aim in life is not only to earn money but also to serve society
through education.
e) Online Education:
Online education has become very popular in recent years. It allows students to
study from home using the internet. Through online classes, videos, and digital
notes, students can learn anytime and anywhere.
One of the biggest advantages of online education is flexibility. Students can
learn at their own pace. It also saves time and travel expenses. During
situations like pandemics, online education becomes very useful.
However, online education also has some disadvantages. Students may feel lonely
and distracted. Not everyone has access to good internet or devices. Practical
learning is also limited in online mode.
Despite these challenges, online education is a powerful tool if used properly.
It should be combined with traditional education for better learning. Online
education is shaping the future of learning.
2 (a) The given
line has been taken from the essay “How Free Is the Press” which is written by
Dorothy L. Sayers.
In this line, the author says that cheap daily newspapers reach a large number
of people and have great influence on public opinion. However, their quality
and depth of thought are often lower than that of weekly or monthly journals,
which are more expensive.
The writer points out that popularity does not always mean truth or
responsibility, and cheap papers may fail to provide serious and honest
information.
(b) The given line
has been taken from the essay “Indian Civilization and Culture” which is
written by Mahatma Gandhi.
In this line, the author says that European civilization may be suitable for
Europe, but it is not fit for India.
Gandhi warns that blindly copying Western ways will destroy India’s moral
values, simplicity, and culture. He believes that India should develop
according to its own traditions and needs, not by imitating foreign models.
(c) The given line
has been taken from the story “The Artist” which is written by Shiga Naoya. In
this line, the author shows the conflict between the boy and his father.
The boy loves painting, but his father does not consider it a serious or useful
activity. Slowly, the father begins to criticize and discourage him.
This line highlights how parental pressure and lack of understanding can
suppress a child’s natural talent and creativity.
(d) The given line
has been taken from the story “The Earth” which is written by H. E. Bates.
In this line, the doctor advises Benjy’s parents to let him keep hens.
He understands that people who live close to the land should remain connected
with nature and simple work.
The hens give Benjy happiness, responsibility, and purpose in life, and help
him feel secure and useful.
3 (a) The given
stanza has been taken from the poem Now the Leaves Are Falling Fast which is
written by W. H. Auden. In this stanza, the poet says that the world has become
silent and empty. The nightingale, which is a symbol of joy and song, is no
longer singing. The angel, a symbol of hope and protection, will not come.
These lines show loss of innocence, fear, and loneliness in a harsh and
uncertain world.
(b) The given
stanza has been taken from the poem My Grandmother’s House which is written by
Kamala Das. In this stanza, the poet says that she often thinks of going back
to her grandmother’s house. The house now looks lifeless, with windows like
blind eyes. It reminds her of the love and security she once enjoyed there. The
lines express her deep loneliness and strong emotional attachment to her past
and childhood memories.
(c) The given
stanza has been taken from the poem An Epitaph which is written by Walter de la
Mare. In this stanza, the poet describes a woman who was very beautiful and
graceful. She was light in movement and kind at heart. The lines praise her
inner and outer beauty. The poem suggests that true beauty lies not only in
physical appearance but also in goodness, simplicity, and a gentle nature.
(d) The given
stanza has been taken from the poem The Soldier which is written by Rupert
Brooke. In this stanza, the poet talks about positive human qualities like
laughter, friendship, and gentleness. He feels peace and happiness in his heart
and connects these feelings with England. The phrase “English Heaven” shows his
deep love for his country. The poet presents England as a land that gives
peace, values, and emotional comfort.

philosopher.

(ii) This essay, "Indian
Civilization and Culture," is written by Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as
the Father of the Nation. He was born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar,
Gujarat. In this essay, Mahatma Gandhi highlights the salient features of
Indian civilization and culture. He says that the foundation of Indian
civilization is far better than Western civilization, and our civilization
cannot be beaten in the world because we are following the path that our
ancestors made for us.
There is a charge against us by Western people that we are ignorant,
uncivilized and stolid, but Gandhi Ji says this charge is actually against our
merits. We can also do everything, but our civilization does not give us
permission to do so.
Gandhi Ji mentions that our ancestors preferred villages to cities because they
knew cities were full of vices, crimes, robbers, and thieves, while in
villages, people live in peace. Gandhi Ji says that the mind is a restless
bird: the more it gets, the more it wants, and it remains unsatisfied.
Therefore, we should not indulge in our passions.
(iii) “Ideas That Have Helped
Mankind” is an essay written by Bertrand Russell, a British philosopher,
logician, mathematician, historian, writer, social critic, political activist,
and Nobel laureate, born on May 18, 1872, in the United Kingdom.
In this essay the author has explained about the ideas which have helped
mankind. He says that we are civilized today but thousands of years ago we were
uncivilized. We were living in jungles and caves like animal. But today we are
civilized. However, today, we enjoy the pleasures of alcohol, music, poetry, games,
and other forms of entertainment, which animals do not experience. It is our
intellect and moral qualities that distinguish us from animals.
Russell notes that it is unclear when language first began, but it must have
developed gradually. Without language, it would have been nearly impossible to
pass information from one generation to the next. It would also have been
difficult to preserve knowledge of the inventions and discoveries made over
time.
Another significant advancement is the utilization of fire. Initially, people
used fire only for protection. It is speculated that a child may have
accidentally thrown a piece of meat into the fire and was likely scolded for
it. However, when the meat was retrieved, it was found to taste much better,
marking the beginning of the long history of cookery.
These are some of the ideas that, according to Russell, have greatly
contributed to the progress of mankind.

important role in connecting people through social media, movies, music, and
news. Because of its wide use and importance, English helps to bring the world

Middle English had many dialects
because England was divided into different regions and there was no standard
language at that time. The main dialects of Middle English were Northern,
Southern, East Midland, West Midland, and Kentish. Each dialect had different
spellings, pronunciations, and words. People spoke according to their local
area, so the same word was written in different ways in different regions. The Northern
dialect was influenced by Scandinavian languages, while the Southern dialect
kept many Old English features. The East Midland dialect later became more
important because London was located in this region. Gradually, this dialect
developed into Standard English used today.

A short story and a novel are
both forms of fiction, but they differ in length and detail. A short story is
brief and usually focuses on one main event, one theme, and a few characters.
It can be read in one sitting and has a simple plot. On the other hand, a novel
is long and detailed. It has many characters, subplots, and a well-developed
story. A novel takes more time to read and explains characters’ lives,
thoughts, and situations deeply. In short, a short story gives a quick impact,
while a novel gives a full and detailed picture of life and society.
