Conditional Sentences

Conditional Sentences start with ‘if’ or ‘unless’ or ‘when’. There are opinions about condition which influence the result.

Types of Conditional Sentences

    There are four types of Conditional Sentences.

       1.       Factual/Universal/Zero Conditional

        2.       General/First Conditional

        3.       Imaginary/ Second Conditional

        4.       Unfulfilled/Third Conditional

Factual/Zero Conditional

Factual conditional is the simplest type of conditional sentence. It is used to express facts and general truths. It is also called Universal or Zero Conditional.

Structure- If/when + Subject + v¹/v⁵ + object, subject + v¹/v⁵ + object
Or
If/when + Subject + is/am/are + object, subject + v¹/v⁵ + object

Example-

1.       अगर सूरज डूबता है तो यह पश्चिम में डूबता है |
If the sun sets, it sets in the west.

2.       अगर कोयला जलता है तो यह CO₂ उत्पन्न करता है |
If coal burns, it produces CO₂.

3.       अगर आप किसी चीज को ऊपर की ओर फेंकते हैं, तो वह तुरंत निचे आ जाती है|
If you throw anything upwards, it immediately comes down.

4.       अगर आप झूट बोलते हैं तो लोग आपको छोड़ देतें हैं|
If you tell a lie, people leave you.

5.       अगर बच्चा भूखा है तो उसे नींद नहीं आती है|
If the child is hungry, he does not sleep.

6.       जब बारिश होती है तो सड़के भीग जाती हैं|
When it rains, the roads get wet.

7.       अगर आप गर्म चूल्हे को छूते है तो आपका हाथ जल जाता है|
If you touch a hot stove, you burn your hand.

8.       जब हम पानी को गर्म करते हैं तो यह भाप में बदल जाता है|
When we heat water, it turns into vapour.

9.       जब हम सिगरेट पिटे हैं तो हमारे स्वास्थ्य में कमी होती है|
When we smoke cigarettes, our health suffers.

10.   अगर ट्रेन चलती है तो यह पटरी पर चलती है|
If the train runs, it runs on the track.

11.   अगर आप पानी को फ्रिजर में रखते हो तो यह बर्फ में बदल जाता है|
If you put water in the freezer, it turns into ice.

12.   अगर हम गर्म कपडे पहनते हैं तो हमें सर्दी नहीं लगती है|
If we wear warm clothes, we do not feel cold.

13.   अगर आप रोज 12 घंटे काम करते है तो आप थक जाते हैं|
If you work 12 hours every day, you get tired.

14.   अगर आप पानी को गर्म करते हो तो वह उबलेगा|
If you heat water, it boils.

15.   अगर आप बारिश में खड़े रहोगे तो भींग जाओगे |
If you stand in the rain, you get wet.

16.   जब सूरज डूबता है तो रात शुरू हो जाती है|
When the sun sets, night begins.

17.   अगर मेरे अच्छे नंबर आते हैं तो मैं ख़ुशी से झूम उठता हूँ|
If I get good marks, if feel on the top of the world.

18.   अगर पक्षी उड़ती है तो यह आकाश में उड़ती है|
If bird flies, it flies in the sky.

19.   अगर तुम बिजली के तार को छुओगे तो तुम जल जाओगे|
If you touch the electric wire, you burn.

20.   अगर आप पानी को 100⁰C तक गर्म करते है/करोगे, तो वह उबल जायगा/ उबल जाता है|
If you heat water to 100^oC, it boils.

21.   अगर आप सच बोलते है तो हर कोई आपकी तारीफ करेगा|
If you speak the truth , everyone appreciates you.

22.   अगर आप बर्फ को धुप में रखते हो तो ये जल्दी पिघल जायेगा|
If you keep ice in the sun, it melts quickly.

23.   गुस्सा होने पर वह किसी से बात नहीं करती है|
If she gets angry, she does not talk to anyone.

24.   अगर सूरज उगता है तो दिन शुरू हो जाता है|
If the sun rises, day begins.

25.   अगर सूरज उगता है तो यह पूर्व में उगता है|
If the sun rises, it rises in the east.

General Conditional

The general conditional is a type of hypothetical sentence in English that describes the probable result of a real or possible future situation. It is also called 1^st Conditional.

Structure- if/when + subject + v¹/v⁵ + object , Subject + shall/will/may/can/should/must + v¹ + object

Example-

1.       अगर आज बारिश होगी तो मैं बाहर नहीं जाऊंगा |
If it rains today, I will not go out.

2.       अगर मैं पटना जाऊंगा तो मैं आपके लिए मिठाई लाऊंगा |
If I go to Patna, I will bring sweets for you.

3.       अगर आप जल्दीबाजी करेंगे तो आप ट्रेन पकड़ लेंगे|
if you make haste, you will catch the train.

4.       अगर आपके पास कुछ ज्यादा पैसे हैं तो आपको अपने दोस्त की मदद करनी चाहिए|
If you have some spare money, you should help your friend.

5.       अगर वह यहाँ आयेगी तो मैं वहां जाऊंगा |
If she comes here, I will go there.

6.       अगर वह कुछ गलत करता है तो उसे सजा दी जाएगी|
If he does something wrong, he will be punished.

7.       अगर इस समय आप पैदल जाते हैं तो आप वहां जल्दी पहुँच जायेंगे|
If you go on foot at this time, you will reach there early.

8.       अगर वह प्रयास करें तो परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण कर सकता है|
If he tries, he can clear the exam.

9.       अगर वह मन लगाकर पढाई करेगा तो परीक्षा में उत्तीर्ण हो जायेगा.
If he studies attentively, he will pass in the examination.

10.   अगर आज सूरज निकलता है तो हमलोग समुन्द्र के किनारे धूप सेंकेंगे|
If the sun comes out today, we will sunbathe on the seashore.

11.   अगर आप गन्दा पानी पियोगे तो आप बीमार हो जाओगे |
If you drink dirty water, you will fall sick.

12.   अगर आप यह परीक्षा पास कर लेते हैं, तो यह नौकरी आपको अवश्य मील जाएगी.
If you pass the exam, you must get this job.

13.   अगर वह मुझे प्रपोज करेगी तो मैं ‘हां’ कहूँगा|
If she proposes me, I will say ‘yes’.

14.   अगर आप तेजी से भागते हैं, तो आप उसे पकड़ सकते है|
If you run fast, you can catch him.

15.   अगर वह आपके खिलाफ शिकायत करती है तो आपको जेल भेजा ज सकता है|
If she complains against you, you may be sent to jail.

16.   जब तक तुम नहीं आ जाते तब तक मैं कहीं नहीं जाऊंगा|
Until you come, I will not go anywhere.

17.   अगर आप मेरे साथ हैं, तो मैं पुरे परिवार के गुस्से का सामना कर सकता हूँ|
If you are with me, I can face the anger of the whole family.

18.   अगर तुम माफ़ी नहीं मागोगे तो मैं तुमसे कभी दोबारा बात नहीं करूँगा|
If you don’t apologize, I will never talk to you again.

19.   जब तक वह कड़ी मेहनत नहीं करेगा तब तक उसे सफलता नहीं मिलेगी|
Unless he works hard, he will not get success.

20.   अगर तुम दवा खाओगे तो तुम जल्दी ठीक हो जाओगे|
If you take medicine, you will get well soon.

Imaginary Conditional

It is about a hypothetical condition that one is imagining at the present time. It is also called 2^nd Conditional.

There are three parts of Imaginary Conditional.

        a.       Action

        b.       State of Position

        c.       State of Possession

Action

Structure- If + Subject + v² + object, subject + would/could + v¹ + object

Example-

        1.       अगर वह मेरी बात मानती तो मैं उसे असली कहानी सुनाता |
If she believed me, I would tell her the real story.

        2.       अगर मैं कड़ी मेहनत करता तो मैं परीक्षा में पास हो जाता |
If I worked hard, I would pass in the examination.

        3.       अगर वह हमारे साथ आता, तो हम उसका सारा खर्च उठाते|
If he came with us, we would bear all his expenses.

        4.       अगर वह मुझे आमंत्रित करती तो मैं उसके शादी में जाता |
If she invited me, I would go in her marriage.

        5.       अगर आप राजनीति के बारे में बोलते तो मैं आपका समर्थन नहीं करता |
If you spoke about politics, I would not support you.

        6.       अगर वह मुझे गली देता तो मैं उसे बहुत बुरी तरह पिटता |
If he abused me, I would beat her very badly.

        7.       अगर गिलहरी मेरे पास आती तो मैं उसे मूंगफली देता |
If the squirrel came to me, I would give her peanuts.

        8.       अगर आप समय पे आते तो हम समय पर काम खत्म करते|
If you came on time, we would finish the work on time.

        9.       अगर वह यह काम करता तो मैं उससे इनाम देता |
If he did this work, I would reward him.

        10.   अगर मेरे ऊपर जिम्मेदारियां नहीं होती तो मैं पूरी दुनिया घूमता|
If I didn’t have responsibilities, I would travel around the world.

        11.   अगर वह आती तो मैं जाता |
If she came, I would go.

        12.   अगर वह मुझसे प्यार करती तो मैं उससे शादी कर लेता|
If she loved me, I would marry her.

        1 3.   अगर मैं अमेरिका में पैदा होता तो बहुत अच्छी अंग्रेजी बोलता|
If I born in America, I would speak very good English.

        14.   अगर मैं आगरा जाता तो ताज महल देखता|
If I went to Agra, I would see the Taj Mahal.

        15.   अगर वे लोग यहाँ आते तो हमलोग क्रिकेट खेलते|
If they came here, we would play cricket.

State of Position

Structure- If + subject + were + object, subject + would/could + v¹ + object

Example-

1.       अगर मैं एक राजा होता तो मैं तुम्हें जमीं का एक टुकड़ा देता |
If I were a king, I would give you a piece of land.

2.       अगर वह एक पक्षी होती तो वह आकाश में उड़ती |
If she were a bird, she would fly in the sky.

3.       अगर मैं डॉक्टर होती तो मैं मरीजो का इलाज फ्री में करता|
If I were a doctor, I would treat the patients in free.

4.       अगर मैं एक शिक्षक होता तो मैं गरीब छात्रों को मुफ्त ट्यूशन देता|
If I were a teacher, I would provide free tuition to poor students.

5.       अगर मैं शेर होता तो तुमको जिंदा ही खा जाता |
If I were a lion, I would eat you alive.

6.       अगर वह मेरी दोस्त होती तो मैं उसे अपने घर बुलाता|
If she were my friend, I would invite her at my home.

7.       अगर मैं उसके जगह होता तो मैं उस लड़की से ब्रेकअप नहीं करता|
If I were you, I would not break up with that girl.

8.       अगर वह मेरी बॉस होती तो वह मेरी छुट्टी मंजूर नहीं करती|
If she were my boss, she would not sanction my leave.

9.       अगर मैं तुम्हरा पिता होता तो तुम जैसे बेटे को रोज पिटता |
If I were your father, I would beat a son like you.

10.   अगर मैं तुम्हारे जगह होती तो मैं किसी पर भरोसा नहीं करती |
If I were you, I would not trust anyone.

State of Possession

Structure- If + subject + had + object, subject + would/could + v¹ + object

Example-

1.       अगर मेरे पास दो कलम होता तो मैं आपको एक कलम देता |
If I had two pens, I would give you a pen.

2.       अगर मेरे पास पंख तो मैं तुमसे मिलने आ जाती|
If I had wings, I would come to meet you.

3.       अगर मेरे पास कार होता तो मैं उस कार से पटना जाता |
If I had a car, I would go to Patna by that car.

4.       अगर मेरे पापा के पास पैसे होते तो वह मुझे जरुर देते|
If my father had money, he would surely give me.

5.       अगर मेरे ऊपर जिम्मेदारियां नहीं होती तो मैं पूरी दुनिया घूमता|
If I didn’t have responsibilities, I would travel around the world.

6.       अगर चोर पुलिस के हिरासत में होता तो वे उसकी पिटाई करते |
If the police had a thief in their custody, they would beat him.

7.       अगर मेरे पास बहुत पैसा होता तो मैं तुम्हे एक कार देता|
If I had a lot of money, I would give you a car.

8.       अगर मेरे पास उसके कार्यालय तक पहुँच होती तो इस समय मैं उसके साथ चाय पी रहा होता|
If I had access to her office, I would be taking tea with her at this time.

9.       अगर उसके बैंक खाते में दस लाख रूपये होते तो वह इसे जरूरतमंद लोगों में बाँट देते|
If he had ten lakh rupees in his bank account, he would distribute it to the needy person

10.   अगर मेरे पास राहुल गाँधी का नंबर होता तो मैं उन्हें फ़ोन करता|
If I had Rahul Gandhi’s number, I would call him.

 

Unfulfilled Conditional

It is about a hypothetical condition of past, which is no longer possible because time has already passed. It is also called 3^rd Conditional.

There are three parts of Unfulfilled Conditional.

a.       Action

b.       State of Position

c.       State of Possession

Action

Structure- If + Subject + had+ v3 + object, subject + would/could + have + v³ + object

Example-

    1.       अगर मैं पटना गया होता तो मैं चिड़ियाघर घूम चूका होता|
If I had gone to Patna, I would have visited the zoo.

    2.       अगर वह मुझे दावत दी होती तो मैं उसकी शादी में गया होता |
If she had invited me, I would have gone in her marriage.

     3.       अगर अलार्म नहीं बजा होता तो मेरी नींद नहीं खुलती|
If the alarm had not gone off, I would not have woken up.

     4.       अगर वह मुझे धोका देने की कोशिश की होती तो मैं उसे बर्खास्त कर चूका होता |
if she had tried to cheat me, I would have fired him.

     5.       अगर मुझे वह खबर पहले मील जाती, तो मैं उए समुन्द्र के किनारे जाने की इजाजत नहीं देता|
If I had received  that news earlier, o would have never allowed him to go to the seashore.

      6.       अगर मैंने अपने डर का सामना नहीं किया होता तो मैं एक अलग इन्सान होता |
If I have not faced my fears, I would have been a different person.

7.       अगर मैं मेहनत से पढाई की होती तो मैं डॉक्टर बन सकता था|
If I had studied hard, I could have become a doctor.

8.       अगर वह समय पर घर से निकला होता तो उसे देर नहीं होती |
If had left his home on time, he would not have gone late.

9.       अगर तुमने मेरी बात मानी होती तो तुम्हे चोट नहीं लगी होती|
If you had obeyed me, you would not have got hurt.

10.   अगर मैंने नियमित रूप से पढाई की होती तो मैं अपनी क्लास में टॉप कर सकता था|
If I had studied more regularly, I could have got first potion in the class.

 

State of Potion

Structure- If + Subject + had+ been + object, subject + would/could + have + v³ + object

Example-

1.       अगर वह बिहार का मुख्यमंत्री होता तो वह यहाँ आ चूका होता|
If he had been the Chief Minister of Bihar, He would have come here.

2.       अगर मैं उस दिन उसके घर पर होता तो मैं उसे नौकरी देने की पेशकश कर चूका होता|
If I had been at his home on that day, I would have offered him a job.

3.       अगर वह मेरी गर्लफ्रेंड होती तो मैं उससे शादी कर चूका होता|
If she had been my girlfriend, I would have married her.

4.       अगर वह मेरी मेहमान होती तो मैं उसे उपहार दिया होता|
If she had been my guest, I would have given her a gift.

5.       अगर वह एक फिल्म डायरेक्ट होता तो हमें उसकी फिल्म में काम करने का मौका मील चूका होता|
If he had been a film director, we would have got an opportunity to work in his film.

6.       अगर वह ज्यादा सावधान रहता, तो उसने कार को नुकसान नहीं पहुँचाया होता।
If he had been more careful, he would not have damaged the car.

7.       अगर आप मेरे साथ होते तो मैं वह प्रतियोगिता जीत चुका होता।
If you had been with me, I would have won that competition.

8.       अगर उसका हाथ मेरे हाथ में होता, तो मैं खुशी से मर चुका होता।
If her hand had been in my hand, I would have died of happiness.

9.       अगर उसका सिर मेरे कंधे पर होता, तो मुझे सुकून मिल गया होता।
If her head had been on my shoulder, I would have felt peace.

10.   अगर मैं उस पुराने कमरे में होता, तो मुझे अपने बचपन की याद आ गई होती।
If I had been in that old room, I would have remembered my childhood.

State of Possession

Structure- If + Subject + had+ had + object, subject + would/could + have + v³ + object

Example-

1.       अगर मेरे पास कार होती, तो मैं उस कार से पटना जा चुका होता।
If I had had a car, I would have gone to Patna in that car.

2.       अगर उसके पास मोबाइल होता, तो वह हमें कॉल कर चुका होत|
If he had had a mobile phone, he would have called us.

3.       अगर मेरे पास ज़्यादा पैसे होते, तो मैं नया लैपटॉप खरीद चुका होता।
If I had had more money, I would have bought a new laptop.

4.       अगर तुम्हारे पास कैमरा होता, तो तुमने सुंदर तस्वीरें खींची होतीं।
If you had had a camera, you would have taken beautiful pictures.

5.       अगर हमारे पास बड़ा घर होता, तो सब आराम से रह चुके होते।
If we had had a bigger house, everyone would have lived comfortably.

6.       अगर उसके पास पालतू कुत्ता होता, तो वह कभी अकेला महसूस नहीं किया होता ।
If he had had a pet dog, he would have never felt lonely.

7.       अगर उनके पास पासपोर्ट होता, तो वे विदेश जा चुके होते।
If they had had a passport, they would have travelled abroad.

8.       अगर उसके पास तुम्हारा प्यार होता, तो उसे ज़िंदगी से कोई शिकायत नहीं हुई होती।
If he had had your love, he would have had no complaint with life.

9.       अगर मेरे पास तुम्हारी एक चिट्ठी होती, तो मैं उसे हर रात पढ़ चुका होता।
If I had had one letter from you, I would have read it every night.

10.   अगर मेरे पास तुम्हारी आवाज़ की रिकॉर्डिंग होती, तो मैं उसे बार-बार सुन चुका होता।
If I had had your voice recording, I would have listened to it again and again.
