NARRATION

Narration is the method of reporting a spoken or written statement either in its original form (Direct Speech) or in a modified form (Indirect Speech).

TYPES OF NARRATION

1.       Direct Narration OR Direct Speech

2.       Indirect Narration OR Indirect Speech


Direct Narration
: When the exact spoken or written words of the speaker are presented within quotation marks (" ") without any change, is called direct narration.

Example-
Ram said, “I am going to school.”

Indirect Narration : When the spoken or written words of the speaker are reported in a modified form without using quotation marks, is called indirect narration.

Example-
Ram said that he was going to school.

Some Grammatical Terms

Reporting Speech (Reporting Sentence): Reporting Speech is the part of a sentence that comes before the quotation marks in Direct Speech.

Example-
Ram said
, “I am going to school.”

Reported Speech (Reported Sentence): Reported speech is the part of a sentence that comes inside the quotation marks in Direct speech.

Example-
Ram said, “I am going to school.”

General Rules

The rules for changing Direct Speech into Indirect Speech are divided into General Rules and Special Rules.

 ðŸ‘‰ General Rules apply to all types of sentences.

👉 Special Rules apply to specific sentence structures, such as assertive, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences.

First, we will discuss General Rules, which are further divided into three parts.

1.       Change of Person

2.       Change of Tense

3.       Change of Other Parts of Speech

CHANGE OF PERSON

i.            First Person in Reported Speech- The First Person (I, me, my, we, us, our) in the Reported Speech is changed according to the Subject of the Reporting Speech.

Example:
a) He said, "I am dull."
He said that he was dull.
b) She said, "I am playing with my brother."
She said that she was playing with her brother.
c) Ram said to me, "I am with my brother."
Ram told me that he was with his brother.
d) He said, "My brother is beating me."
He said that his brother was beating him.

ii.            Second Person in Reported Speech- The Second Person (you, your) in the Reported Speech is changed according to the Object of the Reporting Speech.
Example:
a) He said to me, "You are a good student."
He told me that I was a good student.
b) I said to her, "You are a good student."
I told her that she was a good student.
c) Ram said to him, "You are wasting your time."
Ram told him that he was wasting his time.
d) He said to me, "You are my friend."
He told me that I was his friend.

iii.            The Third Person in Reported Speech- The Third Person (he, him, his, she, her, they, them, their, it) do not change in Indirect Speech.
Example:
a) Ram said, "He is playing cricket."
 Ram said that he was playing cricket.
b) He said to me, "She is busy."
He told me that she was busy.
c) Jack said to James, "They are innocent."
Jack told James that they were innocent.

iv.            When Reporting Verb Has No Object-
If the Reporting Speech does not have an object and the Reported Speech contains Second Person (you), then "you" is changed into either First Person (I, me, my, we, us, our) or Third Person (he, him, his, she, her, they, them, their) as required by the context.
Example:
a) He said, "You are a good boy."
He said that he was a good boy.

v.            Universal Truth Sentences- When the Reported Speech contains a universal truth, the verb remains in the present tense, and pronouns like we, us, our do not change in Indirect Speech.
Examples:
a) Sohan said, "We are mortal."
Sohan said that we are mortal.

CHANGE OF TENSE

i.            If  the Reporting Verb is in the Past Tense, the Reported Verb is also changed into the Past Tense.

👉  The following changes occur when the Reporting Verb is in the Past Tense:

Note: It is considered better to change shall into would in Indirect Speech.

Example:
a) He said, “I am good.”
He said that he was good.

b) She said to me, “I was working for you.”
She told me that she had been working for me.

c) He said to her, “I shall beat you.”
He told her that he would beat her.

d) She said to him, “I help you but you do not help me.”
She told him that she helped him but he did not help her.

e) She said to me, “I was helping him.”
She told me that she had been helping him.

f) She said to me, “He wrote a letter to me.”
She told me that he had written a letter to her.

g) He said to me, “I do not like you.”
He told me that he did not like me.

h) He said to me, “I did not like you.”
He told me that he had not liked me.

i) She said to him, “He was my best friend.”
She told him that he had been her best friend.

Note: If the Reported Speech expresses a universal truth, fact, or habitual action, the tense of the Reported Verb remains unchanged.

Example:
a) He said to me, “Two and two makes four.”
He told me that two and two makes four.

b) The teacher said, “The earth is round.”
The teacher said that the earth is round.

c) He said, “Nobody can live without air.”
He said that nobody can live without air.

d) I said to him, “Health is wealth.”
I told him that health is wealth.

e) My teacher said, “God rules in heaven.”
My teacher said that God rules in heaven.

ii.            When the Reporting Verb is in the Present or Future Tense, the tense of the Reported Speech does not change.

Examples:
a) He says, “My brother is writing a letter.”
He says that
his brother is writing a letter.

b) He says to me, “You are a good student.”
He tells me that I am a good student.

c) She says to him, “You go to school.”
She tells him that he goes to school.

d) He will say, “I will beat him.”
He will say that he will beat him.

e) I say to him, “You are my best friend.”
I tell him that he is my best friend.

f) He will say, “I can do this.”
He will say that he can do this.

CHANGE OF OTHER PARTS OF SPEECH

i.            When the Reporting Verb is in the Past Tense, the Other Parts of Speech in the Reported Speech is also changed.

Example:

a) She said, I was going to Patna yesterday.”
She said that she had been going to Patna the previous day.

b) He said to me, “I am playing cricket with my friends now.”
He told me that he was playing cricket with his friends then.

c) She said to me, He went to Darbhanga the day before yesterday.”
She told me that he had gone to Darbhanga two days ago.

d) He said, I shall play cricket tomorrow.”
He said that he would play cricket the next day.

If  the Reporting Verb is in the Past Tense, the following changes occur in the Reported Speech:

ii.            When the Reporting Verb is in the Present or Future Tense, the Other Parts of Speech in the Reported Speech remain unchanged.

Example:

a) He says, “I am busy now.”
He says that he is busy now.

b) She says, “I went there yesterday.”
She says that she went there yesterday.

c) Jack will say, “I will buy a car tomorrow.”
Jack will say that he will buy a car tomorrow.

SPECIAL RULES

Special rules are those which apply to specific types of sentences. Now, we will discuss the special rules for different types of sentences.

Assertive Sentence

Special Rule

1.       Changes in Reporting Verbs:

👉  say → Remains say
👉  say to → Changes to tell
👉  said → Remains said
👉  said to → Changes to told
👉  says → Remains says
👉  says to → Changes to tells

2.       Comma (,) and inverted commas (" ") are replaced with ‘that’ in Indirect Speech.

Examples:

Direct: I say, “He will dance.”
Indirect: I say that he will dance.

Direct: I say to him, “I am your friend.”
Indirect: I tell him that I am his friend.

Direct: She said, “I am going to America today.”
Indirect: She said that she was going to America that day.

Direct: He said to me, “I like you very much.”
Indirect: He told me that he liked me very much.

Direct: Taiba says, “I read.”
Indirect: Taiba says that she reads.

Direct: Isha says to Khusboo, “Ram plays.”
Indirect: Isha tells Khusboo that Ram plays.

Interrogative Sentence
There are two types of interrogative Sentence.

  1. Yes-No Question
  2. Wh-Question

Yes-No Question

Special Rules

1.       Changes in Reporting Verbs:

👉  Say/Say to → Changes to ask

👉  Said/Said to → Changes to asked

👉  Says/Says to → Changes to asks

2.       Comma ( , ) and inverted commas (" ")  are replaced with if or whether.

3.       The question format is changed into an assertive sentence.


Example:

Direct: Radha said to me, “Is it raining?”
Indirect: Radha asked me if it was raining.

Direct: He says to me, “Are you a good boy?”
Indirect: He asks me if I am a good boy.

Direct: Neeraj said to me, “Are you ill?”
Indirect: Neeraj asked me if I was ill.

Direct: They said to me, “Can you do this work?”
Indirect: They asked me if I could do that work.

Direct: She says, “Is he wasting his time?”
Indirect: She asks whether he is wasting his time.

Direct: Diwakar said, “Does he have a pen?”
Indirect: Diwakar asked if he had a pen.

Direct: He said to me, “Do you not write a letter?”
Indirect: He asked me if I did not write a letter.

Direct: He said to me, “Did you write a letter?”
Indirect: He asked me whether I had written a letter.

Direct: She said to me, “Did he beat you?”
Indirect: She asked me if he had beaten me.

Direct: He said to me, “Did he not call you?”
Indirect: He asked me if he had not called me.

Direct: She said to me, “Has he come here?”
Indirect: She asked me whether he had gone there.

Wh-Question

Special Rules

1.       Changes in Reporting Verbs:

👉  Say/Say to → Changes to ask

👉  Said/Said to → Changes to asked

👉  Says/Says to → Changes to asks

2.       Comma ( , ) and inverted commas (" ") are replaced by the Wh-word (what, where, why, when, how, etc.).

3.       The question format is changed into an assertive sentence.


Example:

Direct: Gautam said to Rahul, “What have you eaten?”
 Indirect: Gautam asked Rahul what he had eaten.

Direct: Taiba asked, “Where is he going?”
Indirect: Taiba asked where he was going.

Direct: He said to me, “What do you do here?”
Indirect: He asked me what I did there.

Direct: Diwakar says, “When will he go there?”
Indirect: Diwakar asks when he will go there.

Direct: He said to her, "What are you doing tomorrow?"
Indirect: He asked her what she was doing the next day.

Direct: The teacher said to the student, "Why were you absent yesterday?"
Indirect: The teacher asked the student why he had been absent the previous day.

Direct: John said to his friend, "How did you solve this problem?"
 Indirect: John asked his friend how he had solved that problem.

Direct: She said to him, "When will you visit us?"
Indirect: She asked him when he would visit them.

Imperative Sentence

Special Rules

1.       Changes in Reporting Verbs:

👉  Say/Say to → Changes to order, advise, request, tell, remind, warn, etc.

👉  Said/Said to → Changes to ordered, advised, requested, told, reminded, warned, etc.

👉  Says/Says to → Changes to orders, advises, requests, tells, reminds, warns, etc.

2.       Comma ( , ) and inverted commas (" ") are replaced with ‘to’ .

3.       In negative sentences, "not to" is used instead of "to."

4.       Words like "please," "kindly," and "don’t" are removed in Indirect Speech.


Example:

Direct: He said, “Bring a glass of water.”
Indirect: He ordered to bring a glass of water.

Direct: My father said to me, “Switch off the fan.”
Indirect: My father ordered me to switch off the fan.

Direct: The teacher said to the students, "Close your books."
Indirect: The teacher ordered the students to close their books.

Direct: Karn said, “Please help me.”
Indirect: Karn requested to help him.

Direct: Pallavi said to Anjali, “Please sing a song.”
Indirect: Pallavi requested Anjali to sing a song.

Direct: She said to him, "Please help me."
Indirect: She requested him to help her.

Direct: The doctor said to me, “Take medicine in time.”
Indirect: The doctor advised me to take medicine in time.

Direct: Azra said to Sadia, “Help the poor.”
Indirect: Azra advised Sadia to help the poor.

Direct: The teacher said, "Study regularly for better results."
Indirect: The teacher advised us to study regularly for better results.

Direct: He said to me, “Don’t waste your time.”
Indirect: He advised me not to waste my time.

Direct: The teacher said to the students, "Don't forget to submit your homework tomorrow."
Indirect: The teacher reminded the students not to forget to submit their homework the next day.

Optative Sentence

Special Rules

1.       Changes in Reporting Verbs:

👉  Said/Said to → Changes to blessed, cursed, wished, or prayed, depending on the emotion of the sentence.

2.       Comma ( , ) and inverted commas (" ")  are replaced by ‘that’.

3.       Optative sentence is changed into an assertive sentence.


Example:

Direct: He said, “May God save her life!”
Indirect: He prayed that God might save her life.

Direct: He said to me, “May you live long!”
Indirect: He blessed me that I might live long.

Direct: She said, “May Shyam die!”
Indirect: She cursed that Shyam might die.

Direct: We said, “May the soul of Gandhiji get peace in heaven!”
Indirect: We wished that the soul of Gandhiji might get peace in heaven.

Direct: She said, “God save him!”
Indirect: She prayed that God might save him.

Direct: They said, “Long live our democracy!”
Indirect: They wished that their democracy might live long.

Direct: The saint said, “God give you peace and every success in life!”
Indirect: The saint blessed that God might give me peace and every success in life.

Exclamatory Sentence

Special Rules

1.       Changes in Reporting Verbs:

👉  Said/Said to → Changes to exclaimed or exclaimed with joy/sorrow/surprise/anger/contempt, etc.

2.       Changes in Sentence Structure:

3.       Comma ( , ) and inverted commas (" ") are replaced by that.

4.       Exclamatory sentence is changed into assertive sentence.

5.       Words like Hurrah! Alas! Oh! Fie! Bravo! What! How! are removed in Indirect Speech.

6.       Instead of What/How, we use very, great, beautiful, good, big, nice, lovely, etc., depending on the context.

Example:

Direct: He said, "What a beautiful place this is!"
Indirect: He exclaimed that it was a very beautiful place.

Direct: She said, "How intelligent you are!"
Indirect: She exclaimed with surprise that he was very intelligent.

Direct: They said, "Hurrah! We have won the match!"
Indirect: They exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.

Direct: The old man said, "Alas! I have lost my son."
Indirect: The old man exclaimed with sorrow that he had lost his son.

Direct: She said, "Oh! I forgot to bring my book."
Indirect: She exclaimed with regret that she had forgotten to bring her book.
