CBSE CLASS 10TH PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTION PAPER 2025

SET-1

Time allowed: 3 Hrs.       Maximum Marks: 80

General Instructions:

Read the instructions carefully and follow them:

1.       This question paper comprises 11 questions. All questions are compulsory.

2.       The question paper contains THREE sections – Section – A: Reading Skills
Section – B: Grammar and Creative Writing Skills
Section – C: Literature Textbook

3.       Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each Part.

1             Read the following text: 10M

1)      ChatGPT can search. It cannot research. The platform has attracted the world's attention because of the speed with which it assembles and produces information in a logical sequence, powered by artificial intelligence, as if a human being were prompting it to write.

2)      Curious about understanding what ChatGPT can do, I opened an account and asked if it would replace research in the future. Promptly, it replied: "As an Al language model, I don't hold personal beliefs, but I can present arguments on both sides of the topic."

3)      The answer amused me. The speed with which it typed the information across the screen was mind-boggling. I could not read the answer as fast as it typed out the sentence. But, when it had finished, I read through the document. It was impressive. It was truly informative.

4)      Five different points had been explained briefly in seconds. I would have thought of those five points in an hour or more, depending on the complexity of the topic. "AI: Catalyst, not Conqueror: ChatGPT and the future of research" was the title that it threw up to my question. It matched my opinion about the future of research after ChatGPT. The write-up had an introduction and a conclusion, just as our English teachers have taught us.

5)      The document came from countless databases, as that is what it's designed to do. By contrast, when I research a subject for an 800-word article, I visit five or six authoritative sources; I don't go to a million as most are copies.

6)      The difference between the write-up of ChatGPT and my research article is the former is a mere summary. When I write, I search new ideas and knit them in a way that reflect my thoughts and perspective. I choose only what is original, unique and fresh and process them in my mind to create a fresh angle.

7)      Research has no value if it only summarises known information. Even a literature survey in your subject requires you to say what you will do with it further, and how.

8)      Research is not a joke. Years ago, I had asked my professor, later on my supervisor, "How can I publish an article in research journals?"

9)      He answered, "When you have read everything on the subject, and have something original to add to the existing body of research." My head swam.

10)   Excellent research is a daunting task and calls for hard intellectual work. When you research, you don't go wide; you go deep. You thoroughly investigate a minor concept, researching it extensively, substantiating each claim with reliable sources, experiments, models and beyond. It took years to discover the atom and the theory of gravitation. ChatGPT can summarise these discoveries, but it cannot add to them. It does not have the mental wherewithal for that.

Answer the following questions, based on the passage above:

i.        Which of the following statements best summarises the author's views about ChatGPT?                                                        1
(A) It can summarise discoveries.
(B) It assembles and produces information.
(C) Its information is based on numerous databases.
(D) It can only search but not research.

ii.       What did the professor suggest to the author's question of how he could publish his research journal? (Answer in 40 words only.)             2

iii.      Complete the given analogy:                     1
Dependable: reliable: rational:____________

iv.     Mention one basic difference between the write-up of ChatGPT and author's research article.                                                        2

v.       Complete the sentence appropriately.    1
The author noticed that the write-up produced by ChatGPT had an introduction and a conclusion, just as he learnt in his English class but it still lacked___________.

vi.     The author was moved by the____________with which the ChatGPT was producing the article.1
(A) originality
(B) information
(C) rationality
(D) speed

vii.    State whether the given statement is True/False:                                                                1
Research is not beneficial if it only summarises the known information.

viii.    Quote the answer of ChatGPT, from the above given passage, when it was asked whether it would replace research in the future?           1

2      Read the following text: 10 M

1)      The climate and landscape in Uttarakhand vary greatly with altitude (186 7619 m), from the largest glaciers in the higher elevation to the subtropical forests in the lowest elevation.

2)      The lowlands along the border of U.P. are covered by the drier Terai-Savanna grasslands, the moist deciduous forest of the Upper Gangetic Plains form the Bhabhar belt. Due to the extensive agricultural practices, most of these lowland forests have been cleared. Snow and bare ice occupy the highest altitudes.

3)      This state occupies 53,483 sq.km., (1.63% of India's total land area). Out of 13 districts, Uttarkashi occupies the maximum area of 8039 sq. km., while Champawat covers the minimum area of 1634 sq. km. Uttarakhand experiences four types of seasons, namely, Monsoon (June to September), Post-monsoon (October to November), Cold weather (December to February) and Pre-monsoon (March to May). The normal annual precipitation in the state is 1446 mm. Rain usually starts at the end of April and lasts until September. The monsoon rainfall is 78% of the annual rainfall. This makes the state prone to flood during monsoon. Bageshwar receives the maximum normal annual rainfall (1872 mm). 81% falls of this rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. Haridwar receives the minimum annual rainfall (1107 mm).

4)      Due to the differences in topographical features, temperatures vary widely. During March and April, temperatures rise until they peak in May and June, when the mean maximum temperature in the southern and valley regions is between 34° and 38 °C, and the mean minimum temperature is between 20° and 24 °C. Temperatures can reach 42 °C in the valleys and southern half of the state and 30 °C in two-kilometre-high elevations on some days. Day and night temperatures begin to dip around the end of September and reach the lowest in January and early February. January is the coldest month, with an average maximum temperature of 20 °C and an average lowest temperature of 6 °C. The mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures range from 10° to 12 °C at altitudes of 2 km.

Subject: Adverse Effects of Ordering Food Online

Sir/Madam

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw attention to the increasing trend of ordering food online. Convenience, variety, discounts, and laziness drive this habit, but its adverse effects cannot be ignored. Excessive consumption of take-out meals leads to health problems such as obesity, acidity, and lifestyle diseases. Most online food is rich in oil, sugar, and preservatives, which compromise nutrition.
In contrast, home-cooked meals are hygienic, balanced, and prepared with love and care. They ensure freshness, save money, and promote family bonding. For overall well-being, we must encourage people, especially the youth, to value and prefer home-cooked food over frequent online orders.

Yours faithfully,
Santa / Suhail

Subject: Complaint Regarding Poor Condition of Roads in Shanti Nagar

Respected Sir/Madam

I am a resident of Shanti Nagar, Kanpur, and recently visited my hometown after four years. I was disheartened to see the poor condition of the roads in our area. The roads are filled with large potholes, cracks, and uneven surfaces, making daily commute extremely difficult and dangerous.
These issues have been causing frequent accidents and vehicle damage. During rains, the situation becomes worse as water collects in the potholes, making them hard to detect.
I sincerely request you to look into the matter and take prompt action to repair the roads for the safety and convenience of the residents.
Thank you for your attention.

Yours faithfully
Sulekha

5         A) The children's park in our colony is well-planned and caters to the needs of children of all age groups. It is safely covered on all four sides with two gates, ensuring security and controlled entry and exit. For physical activities, the park features a skating rink and a basketball court, encouraging children to engage in sports and stay active. In one corner, there are swings and play equipment specially designed for younger children, making the park inclusive and enjoyable for all. Additionally, the open ground serves as a venue for colony functions and events, promoting community bonding. The park operates within specific timings, which ensures safety and supervision. Overall, the park is a suitable and well-maintained recreational space for children.

B) A recent survey reveals an alarming rise in obesity among students, with multiple contributing factors. The leading cause is an unhealthy diet, accounting for 40%, followed by lack of exercise (30%), stress and anxiety (25%), and genetic factors (5%). These findings suggest that lifestyle choices play a significant role in childhood obesity. The survey also highlights the most affected age group as 8–12 years (28%), closely followed by 13–15 years (25%). This indicates that older children, especially those in middle school, are at higher risk. The early years (0–5 years) show the lowest percentage (13%), while 5–8 years (20%) and 16–18 years (14%) fall in between. These findings call for urgent lifestyle changes, including healthier diets, regular physical activity, and stress management among students.

6         A) i. pride
ii. The parents teach their young to be independent by showing them how to fly, skim the waves, and dive for fish. They guide and support them through practice and demonstration.
iii. The parents show pride and encouragement towards the elder siblings when they succeed, especially when the elder brother catches his first herring. They celebrate his achievement. However, they show a contrasting attitude towards the youngest, who is still afraid to fly—they taunt and mock him for his cowardice. This shows they use both positive reinforcement and tough love to encourage independence.
iv. (B) gobbled

B)
i. (A) to be heard
ii. This sentence confuses and frustrates Natalya. She feels that Lomov is complicating the matter unnecessarily by dragging in irrelevant family history. She just wants to focus on the main issue — who owns the Meadows — and not get lost in a confusing discussion about ancestors.
iii. Confusion
iv. Lomov is trying to prove that the Meadows legally belong to him, not to Natalya's family.

7         A) i. Simile
ii. It is ironic because Sir Percival was a brave and noble knight in King Arthur’s court, known for his courage. However, Custard, the dragon, was seen as cowardly by others and cried for a safe cage. So, calling him “Percival” was mocking, not praising him — highlighting the contrast between the name and his timid behaviour.
iii. Belinda is relentless or harsh while teasing Custard, showing no sympathy for his fear.
iv. The image created is of a timid and fearful dragon, who is mocked and not taken seriously by others despite being powerful. He is shown as sensitive and gentle, unlike the brave image dragons usually have.
B)
i. The extract portrays Amanda’s mother as nagging and controlling, constantly correcting Amanda’s posture and behavior. She seems overly strict and critical.
ii. The second verse is in brackets to show Amanda's thoughts or imagination. It highlights the contrast between her mother's scolding and her escape into a peaceful fantasy world.
iii. (C) Amanda longs to be free like a mermaid which sails effortlessly in the sea.
iv. Amanda imagines herself as the only one in the sea to escape the constant criticism and restrictions in her real life. She craves peace, freedom, and solitude, away from the judgments of others. Being alone in the vast, emerald sea symbolizes a life where she can be herself, carefree and unbothered.

8         i. In A Letter to God, Lencho showed unshakable faith in God. Even after his crops were destroyed, he believed God would help him. He wrote a letter asking for money, proving his simple but deep trust that God never lets down true believers.

ii. In Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela’s desire for freedom changed his life completely. Once carefree, he realized his people were not free. This yearning made him a fighter against apartheid. His struggle turned him into a strong leader and symbol of courage.

iii. In A Tiger in the Zoo, keeping wild animals in cages is shown as cruel. A tiger belongs to the forest, not behind bars. Cages snatch away its freedom and natural power. The poem teaches us that it is unethical to confine animals.

iv. In Madam Rides the Bus, Valli was shocked and emotional when she saw a dead cow on the road. Earlier, she enjoyed watching the cow playfully run. The sudden sight of death made her realize the harsh realities of life and feel sadness.

v. In Glimpses of India, modern India honours Coorgi culture by recognizing their bravery and courage. Coorgis are known for their fearless spirit and military service. They have earned respect as great soldiers, and their tradition of valour is remembered as part of India’s pride.

9         i. In Bholi, education completely changed Sulekha’s life. Earlier, she was shy and neglected, but her teacher’s guidance gave her confidence. Education helped her find her voice and courage, enabling her to reject injustice and live with dignity. It became the key to her transformation.

ii. In The Necklace, Matilda’s refusal to accept her simple life led to misery. Her constant desire for luxury and status made her borrow the necklace, which ruined her life. The story shows that discontentment and greed can result in an unhappy and wasted life.
iii. In The Thief’s Story, Hari Singh’s final smile was different because it was honest and hopeful. Earlier, his smiles were fake, meant to cheat Anil. But at the end, his smile showed gratitude and a new beginning, as he chose the path of honesty.

10     a) In His First Flight, the young seagull was held back by fear and self-doubt. He starved for days because he lacked the courage to fly. Once he overcame fear, he discovered the joy of flying freely. Similarly, in Madam Rides the Bus, Valli’s curiosity made her eager to explore the world outside her home. She confidently planned and enjoyed her bus journey, gaining life lessons. These stories show that fear blocks growth, but curiosity and courage open doors to learning and success.
b) In A Tiger in the Zoo, the tiger is shown as helpless and caged. His power and wildness are suppressed, leaving him sad and restless. On the other hand, in How to Tell Wild Animals, the tiger is free, dangerous, and fierce, attacking fearlessly. The first poem highlights cruelty in confining animals, while the second emphasizes their natural strength and ferocity. The contrast makes us realize the difference between captivity and freedom, and the importance of respecting wildlife.

11     a) Diary Entry (as Bholi)
Dear Diary,
Today, I took the boldest step of my life. Everyone expected me to marry Bishamber, but when he demanded dowry, I refused. My teacher’s love and education gave me the strength to speak up. I realized my dignity is more valuable than wealth or marriage. For the first time, I felt confident and proud of myself. People looked at me with surprise, but I know I did the right thing. I will not let anyone treat me like a burden. I will live with self-respect and work to make a meaningful life. Education has truly given me courage.
b) Answer (A Triumph of Surgery)
In A Triumph of Surgery, the wealthy woman’s behaviour was not just foolish but harmful. Her overfeeding and pampering made Tricki sick and weak. She thought she was showing love, but her actions nearly killed him. Such behaviour proves that careless indulgence can harm others, especially when it comes to health. True care means discipline and responsibility, not blind affection.
