When we speak the freedom of the press. We usually
mean freedom in very technical and restricted sense. Namely freedom from
direction or censorship by the government. In this respect, the British Press,
under ordinary conditions, is largely free. It can affect foreign diplomacy,
conduct campaigns to subvert constitution, incite citizens to discontent and
rebellion, expose scandals and format grievances and generally harry and
belabor the servants of the state with almost perfect liberty. On occasions, it
can become a weapon to coerce the Govt. to confirm to what it asserts to be the
will of people.
