The Leader of Men Summary in English
The narrator of the story is a young
man named Ritwik. He lived in an apartment building. There were four guards at
a times. Two of them worked in the daytime and the other two a night. They
lived in servant quarters, and were not allowed to kee their families with
them. They were poor, and illiterate.
Arrival of Roop Singh
Roop Singh came as a replacement guard. He was tall and handsome. His uniform
was always clean and ironed. He was unlike other guards.
Mr Kedia
Kedia lived in one of the apartments. He was wealthy. H was stocky and balding.
He had a number of enterprises.
Roop Singh stops Kedia's guests
One day a guest of Kedia, Mr. Sharma, came to visit him Roop Singh did not know
the visitor. He stopped him from going up. He asked the visitor to talk to
Kedia on the intercon to seek his permission. It was a rule at the apartment building.
But Sharma refused to talk. He said he had been often coming there, and no
guard had ever dared to stop him. But Roop Singh did not allow Sharma to go up.
So Kedia came to the guard's cabin.
Confrontation with Kedia
Kedia was in a rage. He rebuked Roop Singh for his arrogance. But Roop Singh
remained calm. He replied in English, "But, it is not my fault, sir, I was
just doing my duty." Kedia was stunned. He did not expect a guard to speak
English. He felt as if Roop Singh had replied in English to humble him. He
roared, "You talk English to me! How dare you talk? I will kick you
out."
The narrator intervenes
Ritwik had come there. He asked Kedia what the matter was. Kedia told him how
Roop Singh had insulted his friend. Sharma said that he had been coming there
every week and no guard had ever stopped him. Kedia expected Ritwik to support
him. But Ritwik said, "Roop Singh was doing his duty, Mr Kedia. The rules
have been made by us. Moreover, he is new and did not know Mr Sharma." Kedia
was displeased with Ritwik. He said he did not know how to speak to elders.
Then Kedia and his friend got into the elevator. Kedia hated Roop Singh and
Roop Singh stopped saluting Kedia. Kedia tried to have Roop Singh dismissed but
did not succeed.
The narrator and Roop Singh become friends
Ritwik would talk to Roop Singh for a few minutes everyday. Roop Singh was
obliged to the narrator for supporting him. Ritwik learnt more about Roop
Singh. He was a Rajput. He had studied till the intermediate. He had to give up
his studies because his father had died. They had to sell a part of their land
for his sister's marriage. Roop was married when he was only 15. He had a son.
His young brother looked after the farm. Roop looked for a job. He taught in a
school for a few months. He gave up his job because he got no salary. He
changed one job for another. Now he had got the job of a guard with a security
agency.
Roop Singh's interest in literature
Roop Singh had read quite a few good books. He would often talk about them.
Ritwik lent him some books. He found that Roop Singh's understanding was
remarkable.
Roop Singh asks for a loan
Roop Singh wrote a letter to Ritwik's father. He requested for a loan of one
hundred rupees which could be deducted from his next month's salary. Ritwik's
father was not there. So Ritwik gave the money to Roop Singh. When Mr Kedia
learnt about it, he said that Roop Singh was a lazy man. He spent his money on
drinks. He laughed at Ritwik's inexperience for helping him.
New year eve celebrations
On the night of 31st December, the new year eve celebrations were organised on
the terrace of the apartment building. A lot of food was ordered. But only a
few families turned out. Men were drunk and women left before midnight. Heaps
of meat and paneer and sweets were lying on tables unconsumed.
Gaurds are sent for to eat
Someone suggested to send for the guards to eat the food. So Ritwik's servant,
Munna was sent to fetch the guards. The guards came up and helped themselves to
the food and drinks. Roop also picked up a plate to serve himself.
Kedia humiliates Roop Singh
As Roop Singh was serving himself, Kedia went up to him and said, "Mr
Singh. I hope you have never tasted such sumptuous food in your life. Eat with
care. Don't overeat yourself". Then he patted Roop Singh on the back, and
laughed. Roop Singh felt humiliated. He put down the plate and went downstairs
to his cabin. The other guards continued to enjoy themselves. Roop's
insanity
Roop Singh sat alone in the guard's cabin. He brooded over what had happened.
Perhaps he thought of his misfortunes. Perhaps he thought of the family land
that was gone. Perhaps he thought of his wife and son. He thought of Kedia's
humiliating remarks. He lost control of himself. He turned violent. With his
bare hands he tore and broke and smashed the cabin, the furniture and the glass
of the revolving door. He broke his fingers and was bleeding. One of the guards
who arrived there, tried to overpower him but he could not stop Roop Singh.
Roop Singh appeared to be unaware of what he was doing. Soon other guards arrived
and they tied Roop Singh with a rubber hose pipe. Roop was taken to hospital.
He had multiple fractures. Probably he would never be able to work with his
hands again.

वर्णनकर्ता एक युवक है जिस का नाम ऋतविक है। यह बहुमजते सवन में

एक
दिन केडिया का एक मिलने वाला मि. शर्मा उसे मिलने आया। रूप सिंह उस अतिथि को न
जानता था। उसने उसे ऊपर जाने से रोक दिया। उसने अतिथिसे कंडिया के साथ इन्टरकॉम पर
अनुमति प्राप्त करने के लिए कहा। उस बहुमंजिलें भवन में यह नियम बना रखा था।
परन्तु शर्मा ने बात करने से मना कर दिया। वह बोला कि वह वहाँ आता रहता था और किसी
चौकीदार ने उसे रोकने का साहस न किया था। परन्तु रूप सिंह ने शर्मा को ऊपर जाने न
दिया। इसलिए केडिया गार्ड कक्ष में आया।

केडिया
क्रुद्ध हो गया। उसने रूप सिंह को उसकी उद्दण्डता के लिए लताड़ा। परन्तु रूप सिंह
शान्त रहा। उस ने अंग्रेजी में उत्तर दिया; "परन्तु मैं अपना कर्तव्य
पालन कर रहा था, सर इसमें मेरा कोई दोष नहीं।" केडिया
सुन्न रह गया। उसे आशा न थी कि कोई चौकीदार अंग्रेजी बोलेगा। उसे लगा जैसे रूप
सिंह ने उस को नीचा दिखाने के लिए अंग्रेज़ी बोली थी। वह गर्जा, "तुम मुझ से अंग्रेजी बोलते हो तुम्हारी बोलने की हिम्मत कैसे हुई? मैं
तुम्हें ठोकर मार कर बाहर फेंक दूंगा।"

ऋतविक वहाँ आ गया था। उसने केडिया से पूछा कि बात क्या है केडिया
ने बताया कि रूप सिंह ने उसके अतिथि का अपमान कैसे किया था। शर्मा ने कहा कि यह
वहाँ प्रति सप्ताह आता था। और किसी चौकीदार ने उसे कभी न रोका था। केडिया को आशा
थी कि ऋतविक उसका समर्थन करेगा। परन्त ऋतविक ने कहा,
"रूप
सिंह अपना कर्तव्य पालन कर रहा था। नियम हमने ही बनाए हैं। इसक अतिरिक्त वह नया
आया है और वह मि० शर्मा को नहीं जानता था।" केडिया ऋतविक से भी रुष्ट
हो गया। उसने कहा कि उसे बड़ों से बात करनी नहीं आती। फिर केडिया और उसका मित्र
लिफ्ट में चले गए। केडिया रूप सिंह से घृणा करने लगा और रूप सिंह ने उसे सलाम
करना छोड़ दिया। केडिया ने रूप सिंह को नौकरी से निकलवाने का भी प्रयास किया
परन्तु सफल न हुआ।

रूप सिंह से कुछ मिनट प्रति दिन बात करता था। रूप सिंह वर्णनकर्ता का आभारी था कि
उसने उसका समर्थन किया था। ऋतविक को रूप सिंह के बारे में और अधिक सूचना प्राप्त
हो गई। वह राजपूत था। उसने इन्टर तक शिक्षा प्राप्त की थी। उसे पढ़ाई छोड़नी पड़ी
क्योंकि उसके पिता का देहान्त हो गया था। उन्हें उसकी बहन के विवाह के लिए कुछ
भरती बेचनी पड़ी थी। रूप का वह 15 वर्ष की आयु में हो गया था।
उसके एक पुत्र था। उसका छोटा भाई खेती की देखभाल करता था। रूप ने नौकरी को खोज की।
उसने कुछ मास तक एक स्कूल में भी चढ़ाया। उसने नौकरी छोड़ दी क्योंकि उसे वेतन न
मिला। वह नौकरियाँ बदलता रहा। अब उसे एक सुरक्षा एजेन्सी में नौकरी मिली हुई थी।

रूप
सिंह ने कई अच्छी पुस्तकें पढ़ रखी थीं। वह प्रायः उन पर चर्चा करता रहता था।
ऋतविक ने उसे कई पुस्तकें पढ़ने के लिए दीं। उसने देखा कि रूप सिंह की बुद्धि
सराहनीय थी।

सिंह ने ऋण मांगा
रूप
सिंह ने ऋतविक के पिता को एक पत्र लिखा। उसने सौ रुपए का ऋण माँगा जो कि उसके अगले
मास के वेतन से काटा जा सकता था। ऋतविक का पिता वहाँ न था। इसलिए ऋतविक ने धन रूप
सिंह को दिया जब केडिया को इस बारे में पता चला तो वह बोला कि रूप सिंह सुस्त है
वह सारा धन शराब पीने पर खर्च कर देता है। उसने रूप सिंह की सहायता करने में ऋतविक
की अनुभवहीनता का मजाक उड़ाया।
नव
वर्ष की पूर्व संध्या का जश्न
31 दिसम्बर की रात को भवन की छत पर
जश्न का आयोजन किया गया। भारी मात्रा में भोजन का आर्डर दिया गया था। परन्तु थोड़े
ही परिवार आए। पुरुषों ने शराब पी रखी थी और महिलाएँ आधी रात से पूर्व ही चली गई
माँस पनीर, मिठाइयों के ढेर मेलों पर बिना खाए
पड़े थे।
चौकीदारों
को बुलावा
किसी
ने सुझाव दिया कि भोजन खाने के लिए चौकीदारों को बुला लिया जाए। इसलिए ऋतविक के
नौकर मुन्ना को चौकीदारों को लिया लाने के लिए भेजा गया। चौकीदार आ गए और भोजन व
शराब का आनंद लेने लगे। रूप ने भी एक प्लेट अपने लिए भोजन परोसने के लिए उठाई।
केडिया
रूप सिंह का अपमान करता है
जब
रूप सिंह भोजन ले रहा था, केडिया उसके पास गया और बोला, "मि० सिंह, आपने कभी इतना मूल्यवान भोजन जीवन
में कभी न चखा होगा। ध्यान से खाना। अधिक न खा
लेना।" फिर उसने रूप सिंह को थपकी दी और हँसा। रूप सिंह को अपमान अनुभव हुआ।
उसने प्लेट रख दी और नीचे अपने केबिन में चला गया। दूसरे चोकीदार आनंद करते रहे।

सम्भवतः वह अपने दुर्भाग्य के बारे में सोचता रहा। सम्भवतः उसे अपनी पत्नी व बेटे
की याद आई। उसने केडिया के अपमानजक शब्दों के बारे में सोचा। उसे स्वयं पर काबू न
रहा। वह हिंसक हो गया। उसने अपने खाली हाथों से केबिन, फर्नीचर
और घूमने वाले दरवाजे के शीशे को तोड़ फोड़ डाला। उसकी उंगलियाँ टूट गईं और उनसे
खून बहने लगा। एक चौकीदार जो वहाँ आ गया था, उसने उस पर काबू पाने का
प्रयास किया परन्तु वह रूप सिंह को रोक न सका । लगता था कि रूप सिंह इस बात से
अचेत था कि वह क्या कर रहा था।थोड़ी देर में अन्य चौकीदार भी वहाँ आ गए और
उन्होंने रूप सिंह को बड़ की नाली से बाँधा रूप को अस्पताल ले जाया गया। उसकी कई
हडिडयाँ टूट गई थीं। सम्भवतः वह अपने हाथों से फिर काम करने के योग्य कभी न होगा।
